"School for Boer Children at Caldas da Rainha, Portugal." Surprisingly there were 1443 Boers, including 173 children, held in three internment camps in Portugal. These had crossed the border from Transvaal into Mozambique, and consisted largely of refugee families and 'Cape rebels' (ie British subjects who had joined Boer Commandos). Lest the latter should be snatched by the British and shot, they were all transported to safety in Portugal. Publisher: H.J. Emous, Amsterdam. |
